This fresh water lake, surrounded by agricultural tracts, lies about 6,000 ft. above sea level. It’s a popular recreational spot for Kenyans and has much to offer the visitor as well. Boating, fishing, and bird watching are popular activities and the call of the African Fish Eagle is ever-present. Its possible to visit Crescent Island for a bird and nature walk and hippos inhabit the lake, coming out nightly for grazing on the lakeshore. Nearby is Hell’s Gate National Park where hot springs and geysers bubble up from the earth’s surface, testimony to the still active volcanic region. Mt. Longonot, a young volcano, dominates the landscape rising a thousand metres above Lake Level.
